*ORIGINAL NOTES ("DETAILS"):
"Fulfilling a request. I got this [tape] from Jeff Roy in 1998,
and he had transferred the show from Tape to CDR.
First, lets start with the bad. The volume is EXTREMELY LOW!
[...]
At first listen this is a poor audience, but once the volume
is boosted it is a Good Audience, with the potential to be a
G/VG Audience with the proper remastering. Since I admitedly suck
at remastering I have done nothing with this recording.
A good performance that suffers only from a lack of volume.
Too bad that 40 is cut about 1:21 in also. There is an awkward
transition to A Sort of Homecoming as well.
Enjoy the show at an incredibly high volume. These April shows
are the best of the American leg of the UF tour in my opinion.
Unless the volume is boosted, this is for people interested in
filling gaps in their collections."
#REMASTER notes:
As remarked in the original notes, the volume in
this "Jeff Roy" tape transfer is extremely low. Especially the
right channel was virtually silent. I boosted this right channel
with +53dB, while the left "only" needed an additional +25 dB...
But the sound was still there, as was a severe amount of so-called
White Noise (in short: a random signal having equal intensity at
different frequencies).
While this Jeff Roy tape comes from the same source as the "Unknown
Analogue Generation" (transferred? and) shared by dema75 way back,
I had to kinda ran off with it first to discover it was actually the
same. But the Jeff Roy tape has the advantage that it seems to run
at the correct speed, or a convincing speed at least.
And after the clean-up in iZotope (together with a "de-clap" and
a slight noise treatment), I have the feeling that this is actually
an upgrade over the other transfer.
The show itself is remarkable for the 20 minute break due to:
"a lighting rig on Adam's side [...] threatening to fall into the
front rows" (Pimm Jal).
With this remaster I hope to have lifted this show from mere
historical to something quite enjoyable - if only on the headphones.
It took me not 20 minutes, but more like 20 hours to fix this, but
that's perfectly alright for my mild ASD after the ticket-stress
of the upcoming North American e+i leg in 2018... (but I got my GA's!)
Anyway, a (rough) patch taken from the partial "walkman style recorder
with built in mic" was used to complete the cut short "40"
(included separately)
ENJOY!
^PATCH info:
21-"40" [patch]
"From Master walkman style recorder with built in mic.
Location was on adams side upper balcony about halfway back."
"I taped this back in 85, my batteries were loose for the first
half of show, and I only got the last half. I have had it for years
and thought I'd finally convert to cd and share with those hardcore
fans. Sound is really rough, a mono recorder and lots of distortion.
Despite all that, it's pretty listenable. Theres worse sounding tapes
out there. No audio correction was done while transferring, but you're
welcome to give it a shot if anything might help."
NB: A 2CD set can be made by starting the 2nd disc with Track 09.
