Performance notes: Live debut of Babyface. MacPhisto's call after Desire is to the author Salman Rushdie, who had been in hiding since January 1989 after Iran's Ayatollah Khomeini issued a fatwah on Rushdie due to Rushdie's novel The Satanic Verses. It turns out Rushdie is actually in the venue and he comes on stage and hugs Bono. It is his first public appearance in nearly five years and it receives worldwide media attention. A few years later, U2 recorded a song written by Rushdie entitled The Ground Beneath Her Feet and it appears on some editions of All That You Can't Leave Behind.

Performance

A mostly strong performance as per the norm for August 1993 shows with few mistakes for the most part, with everyone in good form throughout. However, the band did almost trainwreck at the start of the debut of Babyface, which did bring the performance down a bit, although to give credit, the performance did improve as the song progressed. Bono's voice is in good shape, though, as usual for these later Zooropa leg shows, he does show signs of tour wear, which does cause some rough patches on certain high-note attempts. However, it is okay as he still gets through the set without struggling too much and still delivers some fantastic vocal renditions of songs in the set.

Sound

It's a good recording, although I prefer the next night's recording over this one. Still, this is okay by any means, as it captures the performance with little audience sound, which is what all of these Wembley '93 recordings do.
Recording: Audience microphone - 4.5 stars

Audience

A great English crowd, as can always be expected at U2 concerts.

Overall

Overall, a strong performance for the 1st night in London. The band are in mostly fine form, and minus the most noticeable issue of messing up the start of Babyface's live debut, they deliver an excellent performance from the Zooropa leg of Zoo TV with few mistakes, which is backed up with a couple of unique moments on the tour leg that are only present at either this show or the following night such as containing four Zooropa songs in a row after New Year's Day, a phenomenal version of Bullet The Blue Sky with Bono giving it his all and last but not least MacPhisto's phone call with Salaman Rushdie who ends up joining him on stage for a few moments. All in all a fine show from the Zooropa leg and a fantastic start to the four nights the band would do at Wembley Stadium this year and one that shouldn't be missed out at all.
