1. Or just acquire a basic minimum level equipment and work with that. The more your invest the best the result
  2. Are these guides still relevant or are they now outdated? With todays technology would a flagship smartphone and an external microphone do the same job as a dedicated recorder?
  3. I have not seen a consistent smartphone setup that is able to do it. There are some options, with some stability issues, but its still better to just get a $100-$200 stand alone dedicated recorder. And then get external microphones.
  4. Is the H2n still recommended?
  5. Not really. Sony A10/M10 is still the best small stereo recorder.

Zoom H2 will still be fine for just a line-input but don't recommend their internal mics or plug-in power.
  6. Would I need separate external microphones for the A10 or would the inbuilt ones be fine?
  7. External is always better.

Think about it. Recorder with built-in mics will always pick up handling noise, and the best you could do is put it in your breast pocket. Which for cardiod mics will get a great capture of you breathing down on it. External mics can be mounted on your head easily.
  8. CA 14s still recommend if on a budget?
  9. Yes those are solid. Can usually find some used in taperssection. If ordering direct from Chris Church, then expect to wait a while.
  10. For $90 more you got a SP-CMC-4U (AT853) set...
  11. Waited for months for the CA-11 I orderd in 2015 and the battery-box broke in 2 years.
  12. AT853 are great, especially those subcard caps. I have a set with all of the three caps.
