Honestly, i'm just sad where they are going thru. Since, lets say 00', they try to please the masses. It worked out for some time, but i never liked it. These days, U2 are not even a shadow from theirselves, to me. But, you know, you always hope something strange like POP happens again. I't never happened.

a more accurate assessment might be that they have chased the millenials since the mid 2000's.

This whole “been a fan since” and “my first live show” shtick has got to go. It comes off as a pissing contest to measure “how long” you’ve been a fan and people use it as a crutch to support their opinions about how terrible the band is now.

The fact that you are on a very dedicated U2 fan forum 18 years since you’ve been “sad” at the band is a bit laughable. You must be a sucker for punishment. Almost 20 years and 5 albums I’d have certainly given up by now.

To me that means you aren’t a fan of this band. You are a fan of a certain era or sound they explored (seemingly in the 90’s) and that is totally fine!

It is probably best that you give up on them since I can’t imagine spending 18 years being sad at an artist.

Let the rest of us enjoy.

Even in the 90’s when the band pushed the boundaries, eventually past there own limits, it’s clear they did so in a way to try and achieve success and largely they did have success. However, when they released pop they never did so hoping to alienate people or with a line of thought that they didn’t care, they did so hoping that an experimental sounding album would still be successful and when it wasn’t, at least in relative terms, it led to the band rethinking the direction they were going. I’m a fan of Pop btw so not bashing the album but I think you’re totally missing the point if you think the band didn’t give a f*** in the past.

Dean you totally hit the nail on the head again. I know this was 2004 and obviously long after Pop, but Bono said something in an interview that really resonated with me. He said something along the lines of “Nobody starts a band unless they have aspirations of being The Stones or The Beatles; if they don’t they should stay in their garage.”

Obviously they wanted their music to appeal to the masses. U2’s music has always been made for that. They are anthemic.

And there is nothing wrong with wanting to appeal to the masses though it seems to be “pop music” is often seen as a dirty word around here.

    Amen.

And as far as pissing matches, I'll just say that I've been on this ride since the very beginning. And I'm glad to have been on the journey. I'm thankful for the self indulgent era. I'm thankful for the "dream it all up again" era. I'm thankful for the experimental era. I'm thankful for the "re-applying for the job" era. I'm thankful they didn't go the route and formula of so many and regurgitated TJT ad nauseum for 10 albums, changing a few chords and the lyrics. I'm thankful they've taken chances. One can argue (and they will) they play it safe live, but they sure as hell never have musically.

Which brings me off my soapbox and back to the original point...

Let the rest of us enjoy. Go find another band better for yourself and your tastes...

    1. how you think you can truly judge a show you did not actually attend.
    2. why are you even here on this forum if they are "disgusting" and if you "dont need to see an old fart who cant remember his own lyrics". Spend your time and energy on a new, young band, you appreciate and enjoy.

As an aside, from someone who attended both shows in Montreal the past 2 days, last night was good, tonight was incredible - super energetic, Bono feeding off the crowd, his voice in top form and the band clearly having lots of fun. NO going through the motions here. Just an amazing show.

So, I'll piggyback the Atlanta show on to that, before the break... based on your comments, that's 3 straight shows with eyewitness accounts of excellent shows, lots of fun and emotion... now, I can't verify if there was a teleprompter at play, but if there was, I don't know how the hell they made that work from all areas of the stage he was covering... maybe they had a hi tech contact lens in his eyes.
  10. Glad to see ABOY back in the set now we need to get wild horses back
  11. yes, hope to hear Horses in Europe. Thumbs up !!
But i'm really happy to see and hear the band play again.

Sorry guys, POP is a former tour. Don't want to burst a bubble but it's not gonna happen. I love they do staring at the sun.
So why all the negative posts?
A band is evolving, and to me they are doing a great
job. The band is at a stage where they really can talk
experience in all it's different sides. They always were
about exploring different styles and idea's. To me that's
why i love their music and shows.
