1. Originally posted by mattfromcanada:Man, so apparently Window In The Skies isn't a well liked song either? I rather enjoyed it. I'm also seeing a lot of shots at October too. To put my fandom in context, I became a fan in 1996. And the order in which I learned about U2 and listened to the albums was TUF, JT, AB, Boy, October, War, Zooropa. And I didn't spin JT and AB a lot in the early days of my fandom. The big ones were Boy, October, War, like a LOT, and I'm sure that October got more time that War. So all three of those hold a place in my heart, and really if you listen to October in it's context is it really such a bad album? How would you have performed if your 6 months of lyrics had been stolen? It's very tough / unfair almost stacking albums up against each other and ranking them because each is a snapshot on it's own. Like can you listen to October and go "Achtung Baby is way better!" as if to slam the 1981 U2 for not whipping out an Acrobat or So Cruel? Where was I going with this? Oh yeah, listened to it about another 10 times this weekend and I really like it!
I like Window in the skies as well. Not a fan of October though. I get what you’re saying about the missing lyrics and the fact that we couldn’t expect an AB type album at that point from the band but I don’t listen to music in the context of where a band are in their careers I listen to it and want to hear something I like. Boy for example is a very underrated album to me. It’s easily the 2nd best U2 album of the 80’s behind only JT for my liking. I know they had more time to write their first album etc, etc. But in terms of quality Boy has more good/great songs on it than the others again except JT imo. October isn’t all bad songs but there’s far too many average ones for me and a couple of poor ones but people say the same about SOI, SOE and I completely disagree. Opinions just differ pretty greatly with U2.
  2. Yes, and I love differing opinions. I just don't like it when people start assigning "right / wrong" status to either theirs or another opinion about something like music....
  3. I agree!

However, Rebecca Black's Friday was just plain wrong.
  4. Yeah I was quite surprised to see WITS being bashed - I thought there was a general agreement that it was quite decent. The videoclip is excellent and the song isn't half bad in my opinion. I actually rate it higher than 90% of ATYCLB and HTDAAB lol
  5. I very much like WITS, and I'd put the latest song in the same ballpark. I'm sure they have other songs, and other kinds of song, up their sleeves. I like a varied palette, if the songs are good. And, for me at least, the latest song is pretty good. (I wish I could write, and sing, a song like that!)

Coldplay's latest album, on the other hand: I'd say (most of) those are really easy-sounding-and-irredeemably-shallow.

As always, I trust the kids and the wife. They've decreed that the latest Coldplay effort is a pile of rubbish, bar HP and Coloratura. They sing out loud the latest U2 song. To me, they're exactly right!
  6. Wow we are desperate to talk about anything besides the titular song of this thread aren't we
  7. Perhaps that's because it's so painfully insipid that there's nothing much to say about it?

It's also a little amusing to hear so many people here trying their hardest to like the song. You shouldn't have to listen to a song 8 times to try and find something in there that you like. Remember when U2 would release something new, that you'd never heard before, that would instantly grab you on the first listen? I've genuinely had to consult wikipedia to remind myself what and when that was and it for me that was probably Beautiful Day... Or maybe WITS - I did (and still do) really like that song funnily enough.

It’s not trying their hardest to like it it’s called giving the song a chance. If you only give it 1 listen and make a judgment it’s a very unreliable judgment. Have you never heard of a song being a grower? A lot of the best tracks out there are growers. Some songs go the other way and become less enjoyable after more listens. That’s why it’s good to give it several listens.
  9. That's just my point though - it used to be very rarely the case for most U2 fans that they had to work hard to find something to like about a new release. Maybe some of the more obscure album tracks were 'growers' but not the singles. Anyway, just my opinion...

I think just because a song is a single doesn’t mean it can’t be a grower. I bet not everyone loved the fly at first listen which is better than most of their singles imo. Ultimately if I really don’t like a song then I’m not going to love it after more listens but if I quite like a song after 1 or 2 listens I could end up loving it after 10.
